If your prescription changes and you fancy a new look or you want to upgrade to a pair of designer glasses, it’s time to get yourself a new pair of specs. But once you have your new frames, what do you do with the old pair?

Save a spare pair

It’s always a good idea to keep at least one pair of your old glasses as spares. Even if they aren’t quite the right prescription, they’ll do in an emergency if something happens to your new glasses.

Recycle the rest

You might not think that there’ll be any use for your old pairs of glasses, but this isn’t strictly true. Many opticians and retailers of men’s and women’s glasses work alongside charities to help people in developing countries, donating old specs to people who need them most but can’t afford to buy their own.

Glasses can also be recycled just like any other material, such as cardboard or aluminium cans for example. The parts in the frame and the lenses can be broken down, processed in a special waste recycling facility and then used to make other products. Lenses in particular can be very valuable, as they can be used to make new pairs of glasses.

So, if you have heaps of spare spectacles filling up drawers and taking up space, why not have a clear out? Arrange for your glasses to be recycled and you can help save the planet or help people in need of your specs, all whilst clearing up some space in your home.
