How Glasses Became Fashionable

Around two thirds of Britain’s population lack perfect eyesight, so we are used to seeing people wearing glasses; however, glasses haven’t been around forever and when they were invented in the 13th century they were considered a sign of disability. The spectacles themselves weren’t very practical, held on only by the bridge of the nose.

It wasn’t until the 17th and 18th century that they became more wide spread and easier to wear, with various ingenious ways to stop them falling off, including arms that slide into the fibres of a gentleman’s wig! Technological advances also meant that they could be made out of steel, and shiny spectacles became a desirable fashion item that showed off wealth and status.

Move forward to the 20th Century and oversized NHS specs were doing nothing for the fashion status of the glasses. However, with 1920’s film stars sporting the coolest sunglasses and 60’s celebrities, such as Michael Caine, wearing chunky frames, glasses were on the up.

Now couple the fact that 43% of people think that glasses can make you look more intelligent and the huge range of designer frames on offer, glasses are becoming the ultimate fashion statement. It’s hard to spot a celebrity that isn’t wearing them, from kid’s hero Harry Potter to David Beckham. And research shows that 40% of people would consider wearing clear lens glasses that they don’t need, in order to get ahead at work or look fashionable.

Whatever your style and face shape, we have glasses that will suit you. All our frames are available in a range of lenses, from shades to clear (just because you don’t need glasses doesn’t mean you can’t get in on the trend!) so have a browse today and find your perfect look.
